Download this Checklist in PDF format

Set up a goal pen
  • Size is 15 feet wide by 5 feet deep.

  • Use at least 3 foot high sturdy material on 3 sides: back, right and left sides. (exercise pen, lattice)

  • Mark the goal line with tape, chalk, rope, etc.

  • Left and right of the goal pen must be open so dogs can play ball off outer sides.

  • Pen must sit against the fence so that balls cannot go behind the goal pen.

Mark handler area

  • Size is 25 feet wide by 5 feet deep directly in front of goal pen ( see diagram in handbook).

  • Mark the line with tape, chalk, rope, cones in the corner, etc.
Mark distance lines
  • Mark clearly the distance you are working (i.e. 25 feet for small to extra large Novice).
  • Remember this is measured from the goal line.
Set up outside edge of field
  • Use cones or snow fencing to mark sides and back of field area.
  • For Pre-Novice and Novice runs the field must be, at minimum, 35 feet wide by 50 feet long, but may not exceed, 50 feet wide by 75 feet long.
  • For Intermediate through Masters runs the field must be minimum 50 feet wide by 75 feet long, the field may be larger, but the dimensions must still be clearly marked for judging.
Set up video camera
  • Use a tripod or hold camera very steady.
  • Set up from one side as far back as necessary to see the handler, dog, goal, entire handlers box, cones marking both sides of distance line and outer perimeter. 10 feet behind the point ball is a good distance.
  • The handler, dog and ball being played must always appear in the video screen shot. The camera may pan but all three cannot leave the video frame.
  • Don’t shoot into the sun.
Field Overview Video
  • Stand in the middle of the field and pan slowly around the field pausing at the goal area.
  • The video can be sent in separately or combined with runs.
  • Field Overview videos can be used for all dogs and handlers from a particular training field with no time limit as long as the fencing and goal/handler box markings do not change.
Shoot your field overview video and sample runs. Email the links to if you have any questions or want to make sure your setup will work.
